LOOKING FOR A LITERARY AGENT?

LOOKING FOR AN AGENT

Part I

Finding just the right agent is a daunting task for beginning authors in the best of times. Adding to the difficulty is the confusing mix of information, much of it blatantly incorrect, that authors find when researching on the Internet.

As the editor of one of the top-five publishing houses in New York says, “The Internet has a lot of advice on it. Some of the medical advice you can find there, for instance, will kill you.” The same with advice to authors. “Some writers who wish to be published often follow blindly the information they find on the Internet. It sometimes kills any chance of a writing career they have had.”

Unsavory business have begun using the Internet to undermine their competitors. These “black hats,” as they are sometimes called, spread untrue negative reviews about competitors in an attempt to push their own businesses to the top. Add to this is the problem of writers who want to become published, whose feelings get hurt by rejection.

The same editor explains that truly professional authors look at their writings as products, and they want to do all they can to hone their products, to make their agents, publishers, and themselves the most money. However, some beginning authors, who have a great deal of ego invested in their works, are sometimes crushed at a rejection letter. They are sometimes personally hurt by the suggestion their work can be improved, and sometimes these authors lash out on the Internet, in an attempt to “hurt” those who they perceive as undervaluing their work.

Richard Lawrence, President of the powerhouse agency, Eaton Literary Agency, says, “I’m just amazed at the number of authors who will put blatant lies on the Internet about publishers, agents, and even other authors. They don’t understand when they do this, they are really hurting themselves.”

Publishers, agents, and bookstore owners talk to each other. It’s what they do for a living! If they come across an author who acts in nonprofessional ways, word gets around, so no one wants to work with such an author. The author is usually unaware of his bad reputation and spends his life wondering what happened to his writing career.

One publisher tells of an author who complained bitterly because his local bookstore would not carry his work, so he breached his contract with the publisher, whom he blamed. In reality, the author was so overbearing and full of a sense of entitlement, the bookstore owner just did not want to work with him. Unfortunately, his breach came at a time when his agent was negotiating contracts with not only mega-publisher but with a movie studio for a three-picture deal. This author will never know what irreparable harm he did to his own career, all because of ego.

The solution? The standard for researching literary agents, publishers, and all businesses is still the Better Business Bureau. They have an extremely fair system of evaluating both sides of any controversy and are thus able to weed out black hats and consumers who are blatantly lying.

Change is coming to the Internet, brought on by lawsuits. Some businesses are banding together, to bring lawsuits not only against consumers and black hats who lie about them on the Internet but also against the hosting spaces that allow this to happen.

“Everyone knows libeling someone in a newspaper article can bring grave consequences, to not only the libeler but to the newspaper who does not check its stories,” says one major agent. “What people don’t understand is that the same consequences can apply to people who spread lies on the Internet – and the people who give them the forum to do so.”

While this article is about the publishing industry, the same sort of lawsuits are now being brought by businesses in most other industries who are being unfairly libeled on the Internet

If you want to find a literary agent, research their BBB rating. Find out how long they have been in business. Any agency that has been around for decades is a successful agency.

“And for heaven’s sake, don’t spread dirt about businesses because your feelings are hurt,” says another publisher. “Word gets around. It may ruin your chances of ever becoming published.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO LARRY PARR, WINNER OF CIVIC RECOGNITION AWARD

Larry Parr named Civic Recognition Award winner

Sarasota awardee recognized for acts of compassion and kindness

By Award Committee

Larry Parr was named a recipient of the Civic Recognition Award on Monday. Parr joins the ranks of others from Florida who have received this honor.

The purpose of the Civic Recognition Award is to inspire people to help others and improve their communities. Recipients come from all walks of life and all 50 states. Under certain circumstances, the award can be issued posthumously.

It is hoped the Civic Recognition Award will encourage people in Sarasota and across Florida to live their lives around ten values than enhance the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. Those ten values are compassion, courage, forgiveness, generosity, humility, inclusiveness, integrity, kindness, respect and service.

Parr is among a select number of individuals recognized in Sarasota. Many individuals never receive a civic award despite years of community involvement. While formal recognition should never be one’s motive for acts of kindness, receiving an award is an affirmation of the positive impact one’s actions can have.

It should be a proud moment for Parr’s family and friends, and an opportunity to share inspiring stories. If fact, by discussing the award, the inspiration provided by Parr’s good deeds is multiplied. Discussion of the award can also help spread the word about the ten values embodied by the award. It is a fact that many individuals feel motivated to do more after hearing about the good deeds of others. Award recipients themselves can feel encouraged or inspired by the recognition to help more.

The positive impact of Civic Recognition Award winners like Parr on their community cannot be measured. These winners were often the first to help people in need and the first to welcome a new neighbor. The existence of community non-profit organizations of all kinds is a lasting testimony to the good works of involved individuals who, like Parr, stepped forward to make a difference.

The lives of Civic Recognition Award winners like Parr are also often examples to children. Children look up to role models to help shape how they behave in school, relationships or when facing challenging situations. When children emulate positive role models, they respond to situations in healthy ways that can contribute to individual and community well being. Positive role models are essential to every child’s well being.

The Civic Recognition Award is one of the highest recognitions possible for individuals. Residents of Sarasota and all of Florida can feel proud that one of the own, Larry Parr, has been recognized with this high distinction.

SHUNNED by Larry Parr

A MOVING PORTRAIT OF THE AMISH AT SART

SHUNNED, winner of Southern Appalachian Repertory Theater, is currently playing in Mars Hill. It’s easy to see why this script won. It’s the riveting story of a splintering Amish family and the son, Levi Yoder, who faces temptations from the outside world.

The cast features excellent performances from some SART veterans and newcomers. Leading the cast is Allen Law, as Levi Yoder, the young man who is unsure of the world and his place in it. The strong supporting cast includes Chris Allison, the Yoder family patriarch, who will do anything to preserve the Amish way of life, Shelby Folks as Mary Yoder, Levi’s sister, Traci Gardner as Katherine Yoder, the mother who was once of the world but wants to be accepted as Amish, Iain Alexander in a wonderful performance as a gay neighbor, Gary Smith, as a shunned Amish man, and Kay Galvin, who is hysterical as the neighbor.

Playwright Larry Parr gave each of the characters in his play complex personalities that reflect the show’s themes. Levi Yoder is simultaneously intelligent, curious, and naïve. His father, driven by love, is unbending in his conviction the Amish way is the only way. He is highly spiritual yet bawdy and earthy. His mother has left her success in the world for her family, and she is more apt to see both sides of issues. Mary Yoder, Levi’s sister, is young, innocent and full of life and fun, which leads to a major family crisis. Another young man hates the Amish who shunned him, yet wants to return to the only life he knows how to live. And a customer at the Yoder’s produce stand who Levi befriends turns out to be gay much to Levi’s shock. “I never knew there were any gay people in all of Indiana.”

The show’s themes of alienation and the universal feeling of loneliness enhance the wonderful storyline that is in turns hilarious, touching, and tragic. The play captures the audience’s attention, never letting our interest wane.

The questions it raises are complex and deep, and the playwright wisely allows theatergoers to answer these questions for themselves. This is very fitting, in a play whose major theme is the idea of there being many different paths through life, many ways to find God, and who is to say only one way to live life is the only way?

The night I saw shunned, it received an instant and lengthy standing ovation. Don’t miss it. It may well be one of the most thought provoking shows you’ll see in a long time.

Congratulations to Eaton Literary Agency
